Strengthening the Employability of Sustainability Professionals

Olive People collaborates with Université Senghor to equip African professionals for impact-driven careers

Olive People recently delivered a specialized webinar for Université Senghor, the Egypt -based university dedicated to training African leaders and professionals in sustainable development.

Founded under the auspices of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, Université Senghor’s mission is to train creative leaders capable of addressing Africa’s development challenges and to serve as a major actor in capacity building across the continent.

The webinar focused on a critical yet often overlooked dimension of professional development: the first 100 days in a new role—a period that frequently determines whether talent successfully integrates and delivers impact within organizations.

Bridging Skills and Real-World Impact

In many organizations, sustainability projects succeed or fail based on the ability of professionals to quickly understand expectations, build alliances, and navigate complex institutional environments.

Research shows that around 30% of employees leave their organization within the first 90 days when onboarding fails, highlighting the importance of structured integration processes and professional readiness.

During the webinar, Olive People founder Patrick Gaincko shared practical frameworks and tested-proven tools used in international organizations and private sector companies to help professionals:

  • Understand employer expectations and performance frameworks

  • Build strategic relationships and alliances within organizations

  • Navigate early-stage risks and institutional dynamics

  • Position themselves as proactive contributors to mission-driven teams

The objective: helping participants move from passive integration to strategic influence during their first months in a new role.

Building Africa’s Sustainability Talent Pipeline

This collaboration reflects Olive People’s broader work supporting the development of Africa’s sustainability talent ecosystem.

Across the continent, universities, development agencies, and NGOs are increasingly investing in programs aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and responsible leadership. Université Senghor itself integrates sustainability across its academic programs and has joined the UN PRME initiative to advance responsible management education.

However, beyond academic training, young professionals also need practical career navigation skills to translate knowledge into impact within organizations and projects.

Through various robust initiatives, such as Impact Job Days, Olive People contributes to closing the gap between education, employability, and impact careers.

Supporting Institutions that Build Human Capital

Partnerships like the one with Université Senghor demonstrate how collaboration between universities, development institutions, and talent ecosystem builders can accelerate Africa’s transition toward sustainable development.

By strengthening both technical expertise and professional integration skills, institutions can ensure that graduates and professionals are equipped not only to enter the workforce—but to lead transformation within it.
